GS1 Bar Codes

Make your business processes faster and more accurate!

What are bar codes?

All bar codes represent data in a machine-readable form. The vertical bars and spaces represent different numbers or letters, which can be decoded by a bar code scanner. The data is then sent back to a computer system where it is interpreted and processed.

GS1 NZ standard bar codes represent unique identification numbers or number keys.

To get your identification numbers, join GS1 NZ.

Why choose GS1 bar codes?

The GS1 system is the worldwide standard at retail, so any product intended for retail must have a correct GS1 bar code that has been issued by a GS1 office.

GS1 NZ is part of a global, multi-industry not-for-profit organisation that develops global standards for the identification of products, shipments, assets, locations, documents and more.

GS1 ensures that the bar codes you receive are unqiue and will be registered in the GS1 Global Trade Number Registry (GEPIR).

It is important to note that GS1 is the only authorised and authentic issuer of GS1 identification number and bar codes in New Zealand - Beware of unauthorised sales!

How do I know which sort of bar code I need?

The GS1 system provides several types of bar codes. The sort of bar code you will need depends upon your requirements, i.e. consumer units, logistics units, or traded units.

Use our flowchart to choose the correct bar code.
